Man, I'm tired of all this talk.
Anyone else?
On a better note, a contact at The Fresh Air Fund sent me some information on their Summer Counselor Program. They're now accepting applications. They're looking for college-aged men and women who love to work with children. You can find more information here: http://freshairfundcounselors.
The last time I was a camp counselor I loved it. It was the summer before my Junior Year of College. At the time some parts were awful; I thought we could be doing better, safer activities and I couldn't wait to leave. However the kids were just amazing. I think that's why I have the idea in my head that I'll be a great Mother one day even though sometimes I forget to put shoes on before I walk out the door.
Anyway, last time I was a Camp Counselor the world was a much different place. Can't it just go back to being that way?

I'm with you. I'm sick and tired of hearing how the world is coming to an end. I mean, no one really wants to hear that stuff. Being a camp counselor sounds like a lot of fun. Glad you were able to do that.
This sounds great Meg. After reading more about The Fresh Air Fund, the "hosts" are actually to host children. The camps are a separate program. Thanks for posting this info!
Great post! I run a summer camp in los angeles called Aloha Beach Camp where about 25 college age kids work with us each summer. It's a fun, rewarding job everyone should do at least once in their life!
I have to say that the camp experience as a child changed my life in many ways-- though my camp life as a counselor and staff member (many different roles) had just as much of an impact on shaping me into the woman I am today. There is not a better place for young people to learn how to problem solve- quickly, manage conflict, negotiate, be creative, and work with others-- until they are so exhausted they aren't sure they can keep going. Then one look at the child who is grinning because they just shot a bullseye in archery or the group hiked to a peak they weren't sure they could conquer- it makes it all worthwhile.
The skills that transfer from counselorhood to the "real world" are many!
Being a counselor is truly the hardest job you will ever love!
LQMom- I agree. It was tough. One child asked me to hold his chocolate candy at the movie theater because he got sick. I put them in my back pocket. They melted. Kids laughed. I laughed. But it was OK. Another child threw his friend on the ground by holding his neck, he was a bully. He got suspended from our program for 2 weeks and came back and I never understood him. It's tough but rewarding.
Thanks everyone for the great comments. Keep them coming!
I have some very fond memories of going to summer camp!!
